A motorcyclist was seriously injured in Dade City when he collided with a deer Thursday night, July 21, around 9:15 p.m. The Florida motorcycle collision occurred near Brinks and Darby roads when the westbound Yamaha rider saw the deer at the last minute and, unable to avoid a collision, he turned quickly which caused his motorcycle to spin in a counter-clockwise rotation. It overturned, ejecting the 70-year-old rider who was not wearing a helmet, according to a report by TBO.com. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports the rider was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa. The deer was killed.

Let’s all pray that this motorcyclist recovers from his devastating injuries.

State Farm Insurance reported there were an estimated 2.3 million collisions between motorists and deer between 2008 and 2010. That represents more than a 21 percent hike from five years earlier and most of those collisions occur in the fall months of October, November, and December. Another way to put the numbers is that a deer-vehicle collision occurs every 26 seconds in the U.S. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports those collisions result in 200 fatalities every year and more than $3,000 in property damage. In Florida, a motorist has a one in 971 chance of colliding with a deer, according to State Farm Insurance.

Bikers and motorists should always drive the speed limit and remember that wildlife will come out to the road, especially near dawn and dusk. If you or a loved one have been injured in a collision on the road whether it involves a deer, debris or logs left on the roadside that have fallen from a truck, or rocks that slid down a mountain, there may be an at-fault party who is responsible for your injuries. Consulting with a motorcycle accident attorney in Florida can help you understand what legal options are available to you.
