CBS Channel 47 in Jacksonville broadcast an image of a police cruiser with a motorcycle on the hood of the car! The news station, gathering information from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and witnesses, reported that the cruiser pulled in front of the motorcycle on Sunday, August 21. There is no word on what happened other than that the biker was hospitalized and is expected to be okay. There is no word on who is at fault for this Jacksonville motorcycle collision. The video shows the passenger rear door was hit. Amazingly the motorcyclist was not killed.
As of July 1, 2008, anyone new to motorcycle operation was mandated to take and pass the Basic Rider Course through the Florida Rider Trainer Program before adding the motorcycle endorsement to their license. No endorsement means the motorcycle rider is violating the law. Florida has more than one million registered motorcyclists and more than 350,000 have taken the course. That might be why the number of motorcycle deaths declined between 2008 to 2009, from 532 to 402 deaths of motorcycle drivers and their passengers. However, 402 fatalities is still a large number, and it is obvious much more work needs to be done to promote motorcycle safety in Florida.
