A motorcyclist was seriously injured when he collided with a left-turning pickup truck towing a utility trailer on SR 40 in the Ocala National Forest. Another rider sustained minor injuries after he laid his motorcycle down on the road to avoid the collision with the truck.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the driver of the truck was traveling on SR 40 and was being trailed by a group of six motorcyclists, all driving Harley-Davidsons, when he attempted to turn left on to Southeast 183rd Avenue Road. The critically injured rider then struck the driver’s side door of the truck.
According to Ocala.com, the motorcyclist who sustained the minor injuries said, “the guy stopped in the middle of the road and I went flying through the air.” He also reported that the Dodge truck did not display brake lights or a turn signal.
The driver of the truck claimed that the crew of motorcyclists was coming up fast from the rear when he went to turn left to visit some property he has in the area. According to him, one of the motorcyclists then darted from the rest of the group and hit him.
The seriously injured rider was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Neither of the men was wearing a helmet. The driver of the truck said he is an advocate for helmet use and wished that both injured men had been wearing them.
