A 41-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured on Interstate 4 in Polk County when he lost control of his motorcycle after a tire on a semi trailer blew out beside him, according to The Orlando Sentinel.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the rider was traveling westbound in the middle lane of the highway when the semi that was beside him in the outside lane experienced a blow out of the trailer’s left rear tire, forcing the motorcyclist to brake suddenly. The motorcycle then overturned and ejected the rider.
Apparently, the truck driver, unaware that anything had happened, continued on without stopping. The driver was tracked down after witnesses provided FHP with the name of the trucking company.
The Florida motorcycle accident is still under investigation and there is no word as to the current condition of the motorcyclist.
Road Hazards and Motorcycles
Riding a motorcycle can be dangerous in and of itself without the added dangers posed by the many careless and inattentive motorists on the road. However, when you throw in road hazards like potholes, branches, and tire treads that can seemingly come out of nowhere, the danger is ramped up that much more.
The watchword when riding is: expect the unexpected. Try to visualize a scenario where something unwanted happens and then determine what your course of action might be. Also, it pays to practice emergency braking whenever possible. You need to know what it feels like to brake hard while maintaining control of your motorcycle.
